University of Kerala has won the first ever Chancellor’s Award for the best University in the state instituted by the Hon’ble Governor Justice P. Sathasivam in the year 2015. University of Kerala, formerly the University of Travancore, is a state-run public university in Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital of Kerala, India. It was established in 1937 by a promulgation of the Maharajah of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma who was also the first Chancellor of the university.

One of the first 16 Universities in India, the University of Kerala was founded in 1937. It was formerly called the University of Travancore in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore (now southern part of Kerala and some neighbouring parts of state of Tamilnadu).

It was ranked 24th among universities. And 47th overall by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2023. Ranks shall be awarded on the basis of the total marks secured in the First, Second, Third and Fourth semester examinations. Candidates who fail in one or more subjects during the course shall not be eligible for award of ranks.

It was the first university in Kerala, and among the first in the country. Accredited by NAAC with highest grade of A++ and scored 3.67 points out of 4.

The university has over 150 affiliated colleges and has sixteen faculties and 43 Departments of teaching and research. The Governor of Kerala serves as the Chancellor of the university.

The period of Sree Chithira Thirunal’s reign witnessed many-sided progress. He enacted the now famous Temple Entry Proclamation in 1936, established the University of Travancore (now the University of Kerala) in 1937.

Kerala University Act 1957- The Kerala University Act (Act 14 of 1957) was brought into force and the University of Travancore was renamed University of Kerala. The University had three campuses located in three different parts of the State viz. Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode. The number of affiliated colleges grew phenomenally.

Sir C. P Ramaswamy Ayyar, the then Diwan (Prime minister) of the State was the first Vice-Chancellor.
